9 free things to do with your kids this summer
The school summer holidays are upon us and the kids are bursting with excitement for their six-week break. It’s fair to say that many parents will be thinking, ‘what are we going to do to keep the children entertained for the best part of two months?’
While organising a little well-earned holiday or time off from work to look after your brood, there really is little time left to be inspired.
Fear not! We have come up with a list of brilliant activities that are free, easy to plan and, most importantly, will make sure that your little ones won’t be bored during those long summer days. We’re convinced that the parents will have just as much fun as the kids too!
1. Hold a sports day
Host your own sports day in the garden and include a game of dodgeball with Aldi’s play ball for the children and boules for the adults. But don’t forget to reward your kids with a winning team medal. They can even help you make these the day before by painting milk bottle lids and attaching them to string!
2. Head to one of the UK’s free museums
On those rainy summer days don’t be deterred from going outside. Instead, pack a picnic lunch with crayons and paper for a visit to your local free museum. No matter what your kids are into, whether it is art, sports, science or history - there is a museum for everyone!
3. Pick flowers
Take the kids on a walk in the local forest, woods or park and go flower picking. Your bunches can be arranged into a beautiful bouquet to enjoy at home. You can also take some time out for a picnic while you are in the great outdoors! Aldi’s multi-purpose floor mats can be used to flatten grass in a bushy meadow and are easily wiped clean after a delicious lunch.
4. Camp in the garden
Give the children a taste of your childhood by camping with them in the garden and use Aldi’s kids play tent for a night of adventure. Make a homemade bird food ball to attract wildlife during the day and watch as your garden becomes an animal sanctuary!
5. Host a fun water day
Host a garden party on a hot day and organise a treasure hunt to entertain your kids and their friends. Let them cool off afterwards in Aldi’s jumbo paddling pool and add Aldi’s compact water slide for hours of fun – extra points for the most creative slide pose! They could even have a water fight with sponges while the smaller children play with Aldi’s bubble guns.
6. Make a show-stopping garden feature
When you head to the park with your Aldi kite don’t forget to collect unusual shaped leaves and rocks to paint and place in your garden back home. You can decorate these with paint or old nail polish. When you’re happy with your artistic creations, they can be used around flower beds to make a colourful border or arranged on their own into a show-stopping garden feature.
7. Camp near the beach
Go on an adventure and camp near a beach in this easy-to-use four man tent. Take with you the staycation games from Aldi, which will entertain your kids either in the car or on the train. Then use this handy beach shelter to set up lunch and dinner. You can collect shells and stones at the beach to add to the kids’ sea-side themed garden border at home.
8. Build an indoor fort
Sometimes you can’t avoid staying inside, and on days like those, build an indoor fort! Drape old bed sheets and blankets over furniture and create a great hideaway where fun games can be played and books can be read, like this magic sound book collection from Aldi.
9. Host a park penalty shoot-out
Enjoy the fresh air and set up a penalty shoot-out in the park or in your garden if it is big enough. Make sure you have a decent ball like this one from Aldi and and you can make prizes, like cupcakes, for the win.
