  • Catalonia to declare independence ‘in matter of days’

Catalonia will declare independence “in a matter of days”, the region’s secessionist leader Carles Puigdemont was quoted as telling the BBC, a move that would defy Madrid and attempt to implement the directive of Sunday’s banned independence referendum. Mr Puigdemont said that his government would “act at the end of this week or the beginning of next”, according to an interview with the BBC on Tuesday. When asked what he would do if the Spanish government were to intervene and take control of Catalonia’s government, he said it would be “an error which changes everything”. The regional leader opened the door to a unilateral declaration of independence from Spain on Sunday after voters defied a

  • Russia Threatens Retaliation Over US Break-in at Consulate

Wednesday 4th October, 2017 Russian staff left the consulate last month, after Washington ordered Moscow to vacate some of its diplomatic properties. The moves were part of a series of tit-for-tat actions during a thorny phase in bilateral relations. Since then, U.S. officials had occupied administrative parts of the compound, but on Monday they entered residential areas that the departing staff had locked, the ministry said in a statement late Monday. 'Despite our warnings, the U.S. authorities did not listen to reason and did not give up their illegal intentions,' it said. 'We reserve the right to respond. The principle of reciprocity has always been and remains the cornerstone of diplomacy.'

  • Yahoo had said 1 billion accounts were hacked. Now, it's saying 3 billion were

YAHOO HAS TRIPLED down on what was already the largest data breach in history, saying it affected all 3 billion accounts on its service, not the 1 billion it revealed late last year. The company announced yesterday that it has sent emails providing notice to additional user accounts affected by the August 2013 data theft. The breach now affects a number that represents nearly “half the world”, said Sam Curry, chief security officer for Boston-based firm Cybereason, though there’s likely to be more accounts than actual users. “Whether it’s 1 billion or 3 billion is largely immaterial. Assume it affects you,” Curry said. “Privacy is really the victim here.” Yahoo first disclosed the breach in December .

  • Las Vegas Mass Shooting Reignites Gun Debate in US Congress

Wednesday 4th October, 2017 Murphy represents Connecticut, where a gunman toting a semi-automatic rifle slaughtered 20 children aged six and seven at Newtown's Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012. Congress enacted no legislation restricting firearms in the months that followed, nor after any subsequent mass shooting, including last year's bloodbath at an Orlando, Florida nightclub that left 49 people dead. "Thoughts and prayers need to be matched by action," Murphy said later on the Senate floor. "The reason why we exist is to act, is to change the laws of the nation, to address challenges that our constituents face." During a visit to hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico on Tuesday, President Donald

In a statement, the County Board thanked the former Red Hands midfielder and his selectors, All-Ireland winning captains Peter Canavan and Brian Dooher, for their work with the county's up-and-coming players. “Since taking over in 2014, Feargal led the Under 21s to their first silverware at the Grade in almost a decade when they claimed the Ulster title in 2015, culminating with an All-Ireland title the same season, the counties first since 2001,” chairperson Roisin Jordan said. “This was followed up with an

  • Catalan president attacks Spanish king over independence stance

The president of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, has accused King Felipe VI of following the Spanish central government’s “catastrophic” policies towards the region. In a televised speech on Wednesday evening, Mr Puigdemont also called the central government “irresponsible” for not accepting mediation in the political crisis that has engulfed the region. The Catalan leader’s comments followed an intervention by the king after Sunday’s independence referendum in Catalonia. King Felipe issued the stern warning to Catalonia’s pro-independence government on Tuesday, accusing it of “inadmissible disloyalty” to the state’s institutions and of putting at risk the economic and social stability of Spain.
